LANDI KOTAL, July 5: Authorities are said to be interrogating two Pakistanis freed on Wednesday by the Afghan government from the notorious Pul-i-Charkhi prison. Officials said the Afghan government deported Ayub Gul of the Swabi district and Amjad of the Lahore district who were handed over to the local authorities at the Torkham checkpoint.

They said that a joint interrogation team was interrogating them in a lockup in Landi Kotal tehsil.

Ayub Gul told Dawn that he and his friend were arrested on charges of travelling to Afghanistan without legal documents about eight months ago. They were kept in different jails there.

He said that before being released, Afghan authorities had shifted both of them to the Pul-i-Charkhi jail.

He said they worked in Afghanistan as daily wage earners. Ayub said that he had met three Pakistani doctors — Karim, Noor and Rouh Niaz — in the jail, adding that they were in the prison for the past several months despite having valid
