Operation against POs, fugitives

FAISALABAD, March 5: An operation will be launched against proclaimed offenders and court absconders within a couple of days to maintain peace during Muharram.

This was stated by the district police chief in a statement here on Tuesday.

He said all SHOs of the district had already been directed to arrest maximum number of POs of their respective police stations. Legal action would be taken against those found involved in harbouring criminals, he warned.

The police chief said special committees would also be constituted for monitoring security arrangements during Muharram.

NRB: The federal government is contemplating to make it mandatory for the elected representatives to tender their resignations before starting any campaign for the October elections.

Sources told this correspondent here on Tuesday that the government had received complaints that scores of Nazims, Naib Nazims and councillors of union, tehsil and district councils were using government machinery for their electioneering. “This is against the election rules and bringing a bad name to the military regime,” they added.

Sources claimed that the National Reconstruction Bureau would shortly notify rules and regulations for elected members of local governments to take part in general elections. They would be asked to resign first then start campaign for the general elections.

Scores of Nazims and Naib Nazims, having BA degrees, had announced to contest for national and provincial assembly seats. The PPP has sought applications from the interested candidates which accelerated the pace of electioneering.

It was learnt that City Nazim Mumtaz Ali Cheema and over two dozen Naib Nazims of union councils who won the local bodies elections from PPP platform would announce their support for the PML-QA in the workers convention scheduled for March 14.

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam secretary-general Zahid Mahmood Qasmi and some other office-bearers of religious organizations have also decided to contest the October elections under the umbrella of the PML-QA.

ARREST WARRANTS: The special judge, anti-corruption (central), Faisalabad, has issued arrest warrants for two judicial magistrates for their continuous absence in separate cases.

Two persons filed cases before the special court against members of raiding teams headed by magistrates Syed Abbas Raza and Mian Zulfiqar for illegally nominating them in false cases. Both the magistrates failed to attend the court despite repeated orders by the court.

On Tuesday, the court issued arrest warrants for magistrate Abbas Raza presently serving in Rawalpindi and Mian Zulfiqar of Faisalabad. They were directed to attend the court on March 28 and April 4, respectively.
