GUJRANWALA, June 21: Six office-bearers of the Muttahida Mahaz Asataza tendered their resignations on Thursday over differences with the district leadership of the alliance.
Earlier, schoolteachers were divided into two factions.
Those who resigned are: District senior vice-chairman Shahbaz Cheema, secretary-general Muhammad Arif Khokhar, finance secretary Qari Riaz Usmani, coordination secretary Ehsanullah Butt, information secretary Muhammad Ibrahim Saqi and office secretary Muhammad Alim Bhinder.
They criticised the Mahaz’s district leadership and expressed their confidence over central leaders Raja Zafer Ahmad, Jamil Ahmad Virk and Hafiz Abdul Nasir. They demanded dissolution of the Mahaz’s district organisation.
When contacted Muttahida Mahaz Asataza district chairman Qazi Azmatullah said headmasters association, educators association and senior staff association had expressed their confidence in his leadership.
GANGS BUSTED: The district police claimed on Thursday to have arrested 71 members of 17 inter-district gangs and recovered illicit arms and looted goods during a one-month special drive.
This was stated by City Police Officer DIG (operation) Khadim Husain Bhatti while speaking at a press conference at his office.
He said the gangsters were involved in more than 100 robberies in Alipur, Hafizabad Road, Ferozwala and Qila Kalerwala.
Mr Bhatti said the police recovered three kalashnikovs, 13 rifles, 11 guns, 48 pistols, a stolen car, tractor, six motorcycles, 35 mobile phones, two TV sets, gold jewellery and cash from their possession.
DEMO: Scores of drivers and owners of motorcycle-rickshaws on Thursday held a demonstration outside the office of the district administration against the motor vehicle examiner who allegedly impounded their three-wheelers without any justification.
They said the motor vehicle examiner had made their lives miserable, benefitted owners of the franchised buses time and again. They demanded his suspension after a probe. They said the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) secretary released their vehicles after many days and imposed Rs2,000 to Rs 3,000 fines.
They alleged that the motor vehicle examiner was beaten up by women passengers of a wagon at general bus stand a few days ago when he had impounded the vehicle without any justification.
They threatened that they would throw the traffic out of gear on GT Road if this practice was not stopped.
