2 drown; man shot dead

RAWALPINDI, June 17: Two persons drowned while bathing in a stream in the jurisdiction of Saddar Bairooni police station on Sunday, police and hospital authorities said.

Kaleem Khan, 28, along with his nephew, Waqas Ahmed, and another relative Abid, 17, were bathing in a stream when they went into deep water and lost their balance.

On hearing their screams, a large number of villagers rushed to their rescue. The three persons were fished out of the water and shifted to District Headquarters Hospital where Kaleem and his nephew Waqas were pronounced dead while Abid is stated to be out of danger. Meanwhile, a 50-year-old man was shot dead by his rivals in the jurisdiction of Chontra police on Sunday.

Chaudhry Aslam was intercepted by his rivals who shot him dead on Sunday. No further details of the incident were available. The body of the victim was shifted to the DHQ hospital for postmortem.

Meanwhile, an under-trial prisoner attempted suicide by slashing his hands and head in his barrack in Adiala jail on Sunday, police sources said.

Amir Khan 25, a resident of Dhoke Chiraghdin who is facing murder trial, attempted suicide by cutting his hands and head with a blade in his barrack. On seeing him unconscious, the duty officers and warden rushed to his rescue and shifted him to the jail hospital.

Later, a case on charges of ‘suicide attempt’ was registered with the Saddar Bairooni police against the prisoner.—Staff Reporter
