KARACHI, June 11: A two-day workshop on ‘Update in urology’ concluded at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) on Monday. On the first day of the workshop, Prof Micheal Marberger and Dr Hans Christoph Klinger from the University of Vienna demonstrated different surgeries on patients suffering from various urological cancers.

As part of the workshop, a symposium was also organised on Monday, which was attended by a large number of doctors.

In his welcome address, SIUT Director Prof Adibul Hasan Rizvi said that modern technology had enabled doctors to detect cancers in patients at early stages and treat them accordingly, which had significantly reduced mortality rates. He also stressed the need for training of doctors in modern technologies in the country.

Prof Marberger said that prostate cancer was the most common killer in men.

If detected earlier, it could be treated and deaths could be avoided, he said, adding that a simple PSA blood test had been found helpful in the detection of prostate cancer at an initial stage.

He discussed different modern techniques for the treatment of renal cancers and highlighted some methods of treatment which gave good results in renal tumours. Dr Klinger discussed laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Prof Zafar Hussain of the SIUT also spoke.
