KARACHI, March 2: The National Database Registration Authority has decided to deliver computerized National Identity Cards in the urban areas of Sindh through post offices, instead of their representatives appointed for this purpose.

The District Registration Offices in the province had been asked in writing to direct NADRA representatives of urban areas for redepositing all the computerized NICs lying with them undelivered. These cards would now be sent to the general post offices for onward distribution among the applicants on their addresses, official sources at the provincial headquarters of NADRA in Karachi said.

The decision has been taken in view of complaints received from the public against NADRA representatives. However, in remote rural areas distribution of computerized NICs will continue as usual through the representatives of NADRA who are also responsible for distribution, filling and collecting application forms.

A report from Nawabshah, quoting official sources at the District Registration Office, said reverting to old procedure, the powers of Nazims and Naib Nazims for verification of applicants not registered with their parents had been withdrawn. Under the old procedure, a DSP is authorized to verify such cases in urban areas and Mukhtiarkar in rural areas.

In Nawabshah District, 2,775,247 forms were sold from June 2001 to February 25, 2002, of which 1,08,300 forms were received back duly filled. The number of computerized NICs delivered so far is 10,556.—PPI
