RAWALPINDI, May 28: Ongoing primary-level examinations were obstructed for the third day in the district as teachers continued their boycott of papers on Monday and held demonstrations to press the government to except their demands.

As many as 205 examination centres have been set up for boys and girls in Rawalpindi and in 35 centres general science paper could not be held due to the absence of examiners as teachers continued their protests before the parliament.

However no untoward incident like snatching of question papers or closing down of examination centres occurred as was witnessed in the first two days of the examination. Papers were not conducted in eight centres of Rawalpindi whereas in Gujar Khan examinations did not take place at any centre.

It is not only students and their parents who are worried about the situation but the district administration is also in a fix as to how papers can be conducted smoothly, said an official of the education department on condition of anonymity.

He said it was the provincial government that had framed policies and would bring forth solution to the present crisis. He confided that no solution was in the offing in recent days and more trouble was expected as middle-level examinations start on June 2.

On the other hand, Pakistan Teachers United Front, in a press release issued here on Monday, said they would go on hunger strike at Aabpara from May 29 and teachers from all the provinces would participate in it.

It may be mentioned here that the teachers are demanding 100 per cent raise in salaries, regularisation of contract teachers, provision of teaching allowance, implementation of new time scale and elimination of monitoring system by ex-armymen.

PPI ADDS: Central leaders of different teachers’ unions from all four provinces and Azad Kashmir said a hunger strike camp would also be organised in Balochistan, followed by Azad Kashmir, Punjab, NWFP and Sindh. The leaders said they would go on an indefinite hunger strike from June 2.
