ISLAMABAD, March 1: Influx of the Afghan refugees into Pakistan has dropped to 1,000 per day from 5,000 a day, before Afghanistan’s interim government took power, the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) reported on Friday.
Refugees’ main entry point into Pakistan was, and continues to be Sasobi, between Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province and Pakistan’s Khyber tribal region.
Quoting its own sources, the news service said 23,000 Afghans had returned home voluntarily since coming into power of the new Afghan ruling setup.
AIP also reported that 196 Afghan families crossed back into their homeland on Friday, under a repatriation programme launched by the UNHCR.—dpa
