KARACHI, May 24: The District Coordination Officer, Karachi, Javed Hanif, has called for preparing a strategy for the cleaning of all small and major drains before monsoons.

He was addressing a meeting of the officials of the city government, KWSB and town municipal officers here on Thursday.

The DCO referred to the directives of City Nazim Mustafa Kamal that availability of pumps for draining water and all other necessary arrangements should be made in advance so that people faced no problem during rains.

He said that all such low lying areas where water got accumulated must be identified and steps be taken in t his regard.

Mr Hanif asked the officials of the city government, KWSB and towns to submit details of drains cleaning procedure and list of all small and big drains within three days.He appointed KWSB Chief Engineer Wajid Ali as focal person while a five-member committee comprising TMOs and municipal officers of Lyari, Saddar and Jamshed towns would decide the policy for cleaning of drains.

The DCO said that a comprehensive planning be chalked out in this regard by June 1. He said that from June 1 all the towns would be handed over hydrants. The DCO asked the towns to provide details about their location, completion of civil work and other arrangements.

Meanwhile, another meeting of EDOs of the city government was held under the chairmanship of DCO Javed Hanif which was attended by KBCA chief controller and project director Taameer-i-Karachi Programme Rauf Akhtar Farooqi and other officials.

The meeting reviewed the allocation of funds for all the city government’s departments and specially the details of schemes under the ADP.

The DCO directed that all ongoing development schemes in education, health, IT, infrastructure, agriculture, rural and urban water supply, fire brigade and other departments be completed at the earliest and in case of any impediment or technical problem, the same should be removed with finalisation of all the related matters by May 31.

He directed that as per nazim's policy funds be earmarked for 16 model schools in the next budget. Mr Hanif said all the departments should send reports about their finances to DCO Secretariat and EDO Finance.—APP
