Flintoff to play as batsman

Published May 20, 2007

LONDON, May 19: England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff will play for his county Lancashire as a batsman only against Yorkshire in a one-day match on Sunday as he bids to get fit for next week's second Test against the West Indies at Headingley.

Flintoff was ruled out of the ongoing first Test at Lord's, after suffering discomfort on his left ankle, operated on twice over the last three years, during Lancashire's drawn championship match with Hampshire over the weekend.

England, who have a new coach in Peter Moores, decided not to risk fast bowler and hard-hitting batsman Flintoff at Lord's.

And in a statement on Friday, the England and Wales Cricket Board said that they would review his fitness after Sunday's Friends Provident Trophy match at Old Trafford.

“Flintoff's injury will then be reassessed by the England medical staff prior to the second Test at Headingley to see whether he is fit to bowl and available for selection as an all-rounder,” the statement said.—AFP
