TOBA TEK SINGH, May 15: The prisons DIG suspended New District Jail deputy superintendent Akhtar Rizvi on Tuesday after a visit on Monday night to probe a clash between prisoners and jail staff.
The prisoners demanded that deputy superintendent (acting superintendent) Akhtar Rizvi should be suspended for misbehaving with them. They reportedly refused to go into barracks till superintendent Sheikh Azhar Hayat was called back on duty who was on seven-day leave.
The DIG cancelled the leave of Mr Hayat and directed him to resume duty.
When contacted, DCO Nawazish Ali said he had sent a report after visiting the jail and holding negotiations with prisoners.
The superintendent told this correspondent that the prisoners had genuine complaints. He said more facilities would be provided to the prisoners as the jail had started functioning a few weeks ago.
LAWYERS STRIKE: An hours’ strike was observed here by the lawyers to condemn Karachi killings.
The DBA held a meeting in which lawyers held the MQM and the Sindh government responsible for the May 12 killings on the occasion of visit of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. They demanded removal of Sindh government.
Lawyers at Gojra and Kamalia also observed an hour’s strike and wore black armbands.
