PESHAWAR, May 8: The European Association of Urology (EAU) has donated advanced equipment to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) which would enable surgeons to remove kidney stones without surgery.

The equipment worth 50,000 euros have been installed at the Urology Unit of the LRH. The chief executive of LRH Prof Abdul Samad inaugurated the equipment on Tuesday.

Head of Urology Unit Prof Taskeen Ahmad Khan and other senior doctors were present on the occasion, said a press release.

Prof Abdul Samad appreciated the contribution of the EAU and said the procurement of such state-of-the-art equipment was rare in the public sector. He lauded the efforts of Prof Taskeen for paving the way for donation of “such sophisticated equipment”.

Dr Samad also urged urologists to handle the equipment carefully.

Prof Taskeen, while referring to the contribution made by the EAU, said the body was striving for promotion of the discipline of urology. He said the EAU had donated equipment worth 1 million euros to strengthen the urology unit of the LRH.

He informed all those present that the first instalment of the equipment had been received while more equipment would arrive shortly.

He thanked the provincial government and the administration of LRH for making prompt shipment of the equipment possible.

Prof Taskeen is a member of the EAU and also chairman of its Australasia group. The donated items include paediatric urology cystoscopes, paediatric resectoscope, percutaneous nephroscopes, uretero-renoscope and a calcusplit-system.

These facilities were not available elsewhere in the province. “Now removal of kidney stone without surgery is possible in the unit,” Dr Taskeen said.
