KARACHI, May 7: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan on Monday issued directives for an increase in the honoraria of postgraduate medical students up to Rs15,000 in the province.

At present, there are 800-900 graduates who are getting a stipend of Rs6,000 or so per month from their employers, the health department, universities and other institutions in the province.

The directive from the governor came during his meeting with a delegation of postgraduate medical students of the Dow University of Health Sciences which was accompanied by Vice-Chancellor Prof Masood Hameed Khan. The governor also laid emphasis on review of the stipends of medical-house officers in the province.

According to a handout, Dr Ibad said that postgraduate students would be given incentives similar to those paid in other provinces.

There has been concern among the postgraduate students over the payment and they were of the view that stipends should be brought at par with the Punjab province.

When asked about the enhanced payments to the graduates, a senior government official said that it could be possible as soon as the provincial health and finance department adopted the governor’s directive and issued relevant notification.
