SIALKOT, May 2: Swoop against activists of the opposition parties continued in parts of Punjab on Wednesday.
In Sialkot and Narowal districts, the police arrested more than 25 PML-N and MMA activists to avert their participation in anti-government rallies.
Earlier, the police had arrested a number of activists and leaders and MMA MPA Arshad Mahmood Baggu was placed under house arrest in Sialkot city.
Many activists went into hiding to avoid being arrested.
OKARA: The police arrested PML-N’s Mehr Nasir Sial, also a union council nazim, PPP’s Muhammad Taufiq Qureshi, and general councillors Haji Younis, Rana Nazir Ahmad, Shabbir Husain Kirmani and Zafar Iqbal Bodla. The Renala Khurd Saddar police took into custody Shah Zaman, who is a paralysis patient.
SARGODHA: Police have launched a crackdown on the political leaders and workers to stop them from joining a rally scheduled to be held on May 5 in Lahore in connection with reception being given to the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Police raided the house of PPP leaders, including Nisar Razi, Hamid Nawaz Awan, Haji Farooq Hasan, Arshad Dhonda and others for their arrest on Tuesday night and Wednesday but they went underground. Hamid Nawaz told this correspondent on telephone that they would join the rally at all cost.
SHEIKHUPURA: PML-N leader Pir Ashraf Rasool Shah was booked for leading a lawyers’ rally against the presidential reference in Ferozewala.
However, he was released after being detained in Ferozewala police station for some eight hours.
Lawyers observed a complete strike and took out rallies against the government. They demanded the reinstatement of the CJP. They also pledged to give the CJP a warm welcome on May 5.
