BAHAWALPUR, April 29: Four constables, responsible for the escape of an under-trial prisoner from local district courts on Saturday, were suspended from service here on Sunday.

Those suspended were: judicial lock-up in charge Muhammad Yasin and constables Muhammad Noor, Zulfiqar Ali and Ubaidullah.

City ASP Zulfiqar Ali Mahar said that three special teams had been constituted for the arrest of fleeing prisoner Shehzad alias Sajin. He said the accused was involved in kidnapping for ransom of a lawyer and murder of his cousin.

Meanwhile, DBA president Yahyah Khan, the complainant in cases against the accused, and bar secretary-general Imtiaz Awan threatened to commit self-immolation at the DIG Chowk if the accused was not arrested within 24 hours.

They alleged that the police had helped the accused to flee to pressurize the bar president to deter lawyers from participating in the ongoing lawyers’ movement against the presidential reference.

The DBA announced boycotting of court proceedings on Monday in protest against the police.

The case against the fleeing accused had been registered last year on the complaint of Yahyah Khan for kidnapping him and other family members for ransom. Later, the accused had killed Rizwan, the cousin of Yahyah Khan.
