NAIROBI, Feb 27: The 60-year-old mayor of Mombasa failed the Kenyan secondary school examinations in an attempt to meet proposed new requirements for civic officials to have formal education.
Mwalimu Masoud Mwahima, whose first name means “teacher”, had become mayor of the Kenyan coastal city without ever graduating from high school.
A proposal before the Kenyan parliament would require mayors and councillors to have at least secondary school education.
Mwahima said he engaged private tutors over the past four years and studied during his lunch break and after work to prepare for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams.—dpa
