GUJRANWALA, April 16: People of remote areas have protested against the deletion of Gujranwala district from the list of 10 districts where Basic Health Units (BHUs) are to be upgraded under the national commission for human development programme.
At a meeting held here on Monday, town nazims and Pakistan Medical Association former president Dr Ishtiaq Tarar expressed their resentment over the deletion and demanded that the district should be included in the list. They alleged that it was a conspiracy against the people of far-flung areas.
They said a delegation would meet the provincial health minister and other senior officers to get the district enlisted.
When contacted, a health officer said the Punjab government wanted to upgrade BHUs in 10 districts of the province to provide ultra sound machines, besides establishment of labs.
He said he did not know as to why the Gujranwala district was deleted from the list.
POWER RESTORED: The Gujranwala electric power company (Gepco) restored electricity supply within two and a half hours following changing wire and other equipment which were damaged due to an oil tanker fire in Daska on Monday.
Reports said an oil tanker parked under the high and light transmission lines of Daska feeder No.3 caught fire which damaged the equipment. The company engineers and line staff reached there and restored power supply within two and a half hours. — Correspondent
