KARACHI, April 16: Members of the city council expressed rare solidarity on Monday when the Treasury and Opposition benches submitted a number of resolutions in the house. The session was presided over by Naib Nazim Ms Nasreen Jalil.

The council in a unanimous resolution condemned the attack on journalists during a recent lawyers’ rally and urged the government to conduct an inquiry into the incident and that action be taken against those found responsible. Earlier, journalists staged a token walkout to protest against the incident.

However, they ended their boycott of proceedings after they were assured by the Treasury and Opposition leaders Asif Siddiqui, Masood Mehmood, Rafiq Ahmed and Ramzan Awan and others that a unanimous resolution on the issue would be tabled in the house.

Through another unanimously adopted resolution, the council condoled the death of former chief minister Abdullah Shah and former senator Husain Shah Rashdi.

The house adopted a resolution granting compensation to the families of those employees of Fire and Rescue and other technical departments who laid down their lives for performing their duties.

The council through a unanimous resolution approved the KWSB to take over the responsibility of rural union councils which were formerly part of defunct Karachi District Council and direct its officials to take urgent measures to provide water and sewerage facilities.
