HOUSTON, April 12: Third seed Tommy Haas rallied to defeat Sam Querrey 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the opening round of the US Men's Clay Court Championships on Wednesday.

Haas converted five of 12 break points to defeat the 19-year-old Californian for the third straight time this season.Both players had a rough time serving, Haas connecting on 49 percent of his first serves while Querrey, who suffered his first opening round loss of the year, managed just 51 percent.

First round: Alex Kuznetsov (U.S.) beat Lars Burgsmueller (Germany) 7-5, 7-5; Diego Hartfield (Argentina) beat Sebastien Grosjean (France) 6-4 6-4; 3-Tommy Haas (Germany) beat Sam Querrey (US) 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

JANKOVIC, SAFINA WIN

CHARLESTON (South Carolina): Serb Jelena Jankovic and Russian Dinara Safina, the top seeded players left in the Family Circle Cup, cruised into the last 16 on Wednesday.
