KARACHI, April 12: The city district government moved an application in the Sindh High Court on Thursday for the review of Tuesday’s court order fixing the retail milk price at Rs32 per litre.

The CDGK senior counsel Manzoor Ahmed, who was not present at Tuesday’s hearing because of proceedings on another petition before another division bench, submitted in the application that April 10 was fixed for hearing of a contempt application moved by the petitioner milk retailers association. The petitioner had alleged that the CDGK had failed to fix an interim price pending fixation of an agreed price by a committee of stakeholders appointed by the court.

To counter the contempt allegation, a CDGK counsel produced documentary evidence showing that the court-appointed committee fixed an interim price in terms of the court order and was continuing its deliberations on a permanent agreed price.

The interim price fixed by the committee for retailers was Rs30 per litre as against the previous retail price of Rs28 per litre. Under the committee decision, to which milk sellers and other stakeholders were a party, the wholesalers were to supply milk to retailers at Rs28 per litre. However, the petitioner’s counsel pressed for a higher interim price, though there was no occasion for such a plea in the course of hearing of a contempt application. The proceedings resulted in the fixation of interim price at Rs32, which would be a burden on the consumers.

The city government requested the court to review its order for an interim price as it has already been fixed by a committee appointed by it.
