GUJRANWALA, April 6: More than 400 tractor-trolley owners on Friday demonstrated against the National Highway and Motorway Police officials for “not allowing them to ply their vehicles on GT Road”.
Parking vehicles in front of the office of the motorway police, they chanted slogans against the officials and attempted to throw the traffic out of gear.
A Cantonment police team, led by an SHO, reached the troubled spot and held talks with the representatives of the protesters. They, however, continued to criticise the NH&MP officials and marched on GT Road holding banners.
Demonstrating outside the office of the motorway SSP, they alleged that the motorway police fined each driver Rs3,000 for a minor mistake despite the fact that a driver earned up to Rs400 daily.
The motorway police not only punctured the tyres of their vehicles, but also humiliated them.
SSP Osama Mumtaz assured them that strict action would be taken against the patrolling officers involved in manhandling drivers and the amount of fine would be reduced drastically. He directed the drivers to ply their vehicles on hard shoulder of GT Road instead of driving in the middle to avoid fine.
