LAHORE, April 5: A one-man tribunal probing the March 17 clashes between police and lawyers on Thursday appointed a local commission for examination of ransacked chambers of lawyers.

The tribunal, comprising Justice Syed Zahid Husain of the Lahore High Court, is holding the inquiry.

The judge appointed advocate Malik Saeed Hassan as local commission and directed him to submit a report with the consultation of the LHC registrar by Saturday (tomorrow).

Earlier, the court recorded statements of six witnesses of police, including DSP Multan Khan and two injured constables, who also submitted their medical certificates. The lawyers challenged the authenticity of the certificates.

On a query, the DSP replied to the court that his force on its own had fired teargas shells inside the high court building. He denied he ever ordered anybody to fire shells.

Earlier, the judge had also summoned for April 6 (today) footages of TV channels and photographs published in newspapers of the incident.

The court has so far recorded statements of 11 journalists and 14 lawyers.

For recording more evidence from police, the court adjourned further hearing for Friday (today).
