GUJRANWALA, April 5: A trader was shot dead by unidentified assailants on Sialkot Road on Thursday. Reports said Waqas Ahmad was standing outside his shop when some armed motorcyclists came there and opened fire, killing him on the spot.
The reason for the murder could not be ascertained. The body was removed to DHQ hospital for autopsy.
Police have registered a case.
POOR WORK: Residents of Rata Road took out a protest procession on Thursday against what they said substandard construction of the road by the buildings contractor and demanded stoppage of further work on it.
Later the protesters reached the district nazim office and apprised him of the poor construction work.
They have demanded an inquiry into the matter.
PROTEST: The district bar association on Thursday observed a complete strike and boycotted courts against the `suspension’ of chief justice. At a meeting held here with bar president Ilyas Rehan in the chair, the participants expressed their solidarity with the chief justice and vowed to continue protest till his reinstatement.
On the other hand, some lawyers who had been banned in bar compound on charges of attending lawyers’ convention, called on the bar president and assured him that they would not participate in any function of the government in future.
The DBA chief told them that the issue would be decided in the bar meeting shortly.
Meanwhile, a female lawyer, Miss Samina Zareen, has issued a legal notice to the DBA president and the secretary-general for banning her entry, saying that she did not attend the lawyers’ convention called by the chief minister.
EXAM CENTRES: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) has constituted 476 examination centres and 18 control rooms in six districts for matriculation annual examination 2007 to be commenced from April 7 (tomorrow).
This was stated by board chairman Masudul Haq at a news conference in his office here on Thursday.
He said 51 examination centres had been declared sensitive and tight security measures taken in this regard.
He said a help line with phone (055-3020452) and main control room (055-9200750-9201248) had been set up in the board complex which would work round the clock and till 11pm, respectively.
He said one-window operation was already working outside the board’s main gate.
