SWABI, April 4: The National Institute for Handicapped (NIH), Islamabad, held a free medical camp for the disabled in the Swabi district here on Wednesday.

The camp was organised by the Khidmat-i-Mazooran under the outreach programme and the objective was to treat the disabled in their home district, saving them from the trouble of travelling to Islamabad.

Khalid Latif, a social welfare officer at NIH, informed journalists that the institute would provide about 100 wheelchairs to the local needy people.

“We have planned to provide crutches, CP chairs, appliances and prostheses and other instruments along with free treatment to the disabled,” he said.

The NIH staff also gave the disabled exercise tips and suggested physical treatment.

Sher Rehman and Fazal Dad, president and general secretary of Khidmat-i-Mazooran, respectively, said that about 130 disabled people were examined at the camp and medicines were provided to them.

There are a total of 530 disabled people registered with the KM, said Mr Rehman.

The general secretary said they planned to launch a campaign for the registration of the disabled in each union council, indicating that they had not reach all the disabled in the province so far.

BLOOD DONATION: A free blood donation and a free eye camp was held in the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology on Tuesday.

The blood donation camp was organised by the Fatimid Foundation and the free eye camp by the Al-Shifa Trust Eye hospital, Rawalpindi, in collaboration with the Project Topi, a welfare body of the GIK Institute students.

The camp comprised three activities: blood-donation, eye-screening and hepatitis B vaccination.

The organisers said there was dire need of remedial measures to control thalassaemia and hepatitis.

There are about 25,000 thalassaemia patients in the province, they added.
