HYDERABAD, April 3: Lawyers boycotted courts, staged demonstrations and rallies across the province on Tuesday in response to a call for protest given by Pakistan and Sindh Bar Councils against rendering the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry ‘non-functional’. They called for the reinstatement of CJP.
The protest coincides with Justice Iftikhar’s appearance before Supreme Judicial Council the same day.
A number of political parties had also brought out rallies in support of Justice Iftikhar.
In Hyderabad, members of Sindh Bar Council, High Court and District Bar Associations boycotted courts and held a general body meeting.
The lawyers’ leaders demanded the government should reinstate him.
DADU: Lawyers in Dadu, Mehar, Khairpur Nathan Shah, Johi, Sehwan and Kotri towns boycotted courts and held a rally, which marched to the local press club where the participants staged a demonstration.
SANGHAR: Lawyers boycotted courts and DBA and taluka bar associations decided in protest meetings to call a province-wide lawyers convention in Sanghar to chalk out future course of action for upholding the independence of judiciary. The members also demanded the CJP’s reinstatement.
Lawyers also boycotted courts in Khipro, Shahdadpur and Tando Adam.
THATTA: Lawyers staged a procession followed by a sit-in on the National Highway at Makli resulting in suspension of traffic for about an hour.
They pledged to continue their protest and boycott of courts till the reinstatement of CJP.
JACOBABAD: With black strips around their arms as mark of protest lawyers staged a rally, which marched on different roads before terminating at the press club where the participants observed a token hunger strike for an hour.
Activists of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf also brought pout a rally.
NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Lawyers in Naushahro Feroze, Moro, Kandiaro and Bhirya city boycotted courts and staged rallies. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, PPP and Awami Tehrik activists also staged rallies outside the press club.
KHAIRPUR: Lawyers boycotted courts and staged a procession in Khairpur, Gambat, Thari Mirwah and Kingri talukas.
In Sukkur DBA President Qurban Malani led a demonstration outside the DBA office after boycotting court proceedings.
MIRPURKHAS: More than 100 lawyers took part in a rally after boycotting court. They demanded immediate reinstatement of CJP. The lawyers also observed a token hunger strike outside the bar office.
NAWABSHAH: Members of DBA boycotted courts and staged a rally. Separately, activists of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) and Tehrik-i-Insaf staged rallies.
BADIN: Lawyers boycotted court proceedings. Later, about 40 lawyers staged a rally.
Activists of Jamaat-i-Islami staged a rally against detention of Qazi Hussain Ahmed and suspension of CJP.
LARKANA: Lawyers boycotted proceedings of the circuit bench of Sindh High Court and lower courts and took out a procession.
