NOWSHERA, April 3: People affected by flash flood in Kabul and Khiyali rivers in the district have urged the NWFP government to take prompt action for rescue and relief.

Villagers gathered at the Manakhel Government Primary School on Tuesday to voice concern over the apathy of the federal and provincial governments towards the plight of the people hit by the flood. They were led by MPA Maulana Mujahid Khan.

People complained that they had lost their houses and standing crops, but the government was doing nothing to provide them relief.

They also demanded compensation for the losses they had suffered and said that the prime minister had announced Rs100 million for the construction of protective spurs along River Kabul, which should be materialised to save them from calamities in future.

District Nazim Daud Khattak said that epidemic may break out in the area in the aftermath of the flood and urged the government to provide medicines and health facilities.

ANP: Meanwhile, Awami National Party leader Arbab Mohammad Ayub Jan urged the NWFP government to provide relief to villagers hit by severe flood in Kabul and Khiyali rivers, APP adds.

In a press statement issued here on Tuesday, Mr Jan said that due to flood in Kabul and Khiyali rivers, people living along the river banks had suffered great losses.

He said the provincial government should conduct survey to assess the losses so that the affected people could be compensated.

He said the government should also provide financial assistance on instant basis to the flood-hit people and arrange interest free loans for them.
