LAHORE, April 2: Police claimed on Monday to have killed notorious extortionist Aslam Basa, along with two of his accomplices, in an alleged ‘encounter’ at Raiwind City.

According to a police handout, Basa and his accomplices - Nauman alias Kashi and Salim alias Jaga - were in CIA lock-up at Khahna.

Police claimed the inspector on duty had to go to Ferozpur Road, along with other officials, to respond an emergency call, leaving Bass and his accomplices under the charge of two constables.

The handout claimed that soon after the inspector’s departure, some unidentified outlaws entered the CIA cell and overpowered the constables. The outlaws then detained the policemen in a lockup and set the accused free, the handout claimed.

Following the incident, police cordoned off the whole area and started chasing the outlaws including Basa.

The chasing party intercepted the outlaws on Jia Baga Road, where, according to police, they were looting people.

Police claimed the outlaws opened fire on them on noticing their presence.

The police returned the fire killing Bassa and his two accomplices on the spot, while the outlaws who had set them free managed to escape, the handout claimed.

A semi-automatic gun and a klashnikov were found near the bodies, it added.

According to the police, Aslam Basa was involved in more than 250 incidents of murder, dacoity and extortion. He was carrying a head money of Rs1 million. He had killed 19 people, and his accomplices - Nauman and Salim - had kidnapped 21 children during the first three months of 2007, charging Rs6.2 million from their parents for their release, the police added.

CCPO Malik Iqbal has announced cash and commendatory certificates for the CIA team involved in the ‘encounter’.

SUSPENDED: The CCPO on Monday suspended a CIA sub-inspector from service for his alleged involvement in corruption and misuse of authority.

SI Muhammad Azeem had stolen Rs50,000 from the house of one Safia Begum in Saddar during an alleged anti-narcotics raid.

KILLS WIFE: A man shot dead his wife in the name of ‘honour’ in Misri Shah here on Monday.

According to the police, accused Hafizur Rehman suspected that his wife Rabia, 28, had relations with a man of the same locality. On Monday, he fired at her wife after a quarrel, killing her instantly. The deceased was a mother of an infant. The accused managed to escape from the scene.
