KARACHI, March 30: A US firm has shown interest in the solid waste management system in Karachi for power production by recycling garbage.

A delegation of the US firm, Nixon Peabody LLP, called on City Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil at her office on Friday and expressed their desire to manage solid waste and set up a power plant.

Nasreen Jalil briefed the delegation that Karachi generated over 8,000 tonnes garbage daily but only 3,000 tonnes garbage was shifted to the landfill sites.

She said there were two landfill sites at Jam Chakro and Hub River Road where garbage was being dumped. She said the city government was responsible for dumping the garbage at the landfill sites and explained the process of collection and shifting of garbage from doorsteps of citizens to the landfill sites.

The naib nazim said the Asian Development Bank had announced $40 million to the city government for improvement in the garbage transfer system.

“The city government wanted to ensure transfer of the garbage to the landfill sites and for which it would encourage any company to work for the solid waste management and produce electricity by garbage recycling,” she added.

The meeting decided that the delegation would inspect the landfill sites in a couple of days to review the basic needs and problems for setting up of power generation plant.
