Avalanches block highway

Published March 27, 2007

GILGIT, March 26: Avalanches that hit the Karakoram Highway three days ago near Shaness, 35km north of Gilgit, and at Shishkat, 140km north of here, could not be cleared until Monday despite continued efforts undertaken by the Frontier Works Organisation.

Reports said the avalanches had cut off parts of Hunza and Nagar with the rest of the region while another avalanche on the Karakoram Highway near Harespo College had been cleared.

Reports from upper Hunza indicated that an avalanche near Shishkat hit the highway twice within a week where local volunteers had paved an alternative route but that too had been hit by an avalanche.

Reports said the area between upper Hunza and lower Nagar are under the constant threat of avalanches.
