Tunnel leading to US embassy found

Published February 26, 2002

ROME, Feb 25: A startling discovery in Rome offered a glimpse into the scope of suspected terrorist plans against the United States.

Police in the Italian capital have discovered an underground tunnel leading directly to the US embassy which could have been used in a terrorist attack, Italian newspapers reported.

The discovery came after the arrest of four Moroccans in Rome on Tuesday, when police found ferrocyanide and maps of the US embassy, as well as plans of water networks and explosives in their Rome apartment.

The four men were arrested for possessing the cyanide-based substance and public prosecutor’s office has said they would face charges of “subversive association” and terrorism.—AFP
