KARACHI, March 19: The city government has received a detailed report the survey conducted by a leading Chinese firm over a period of five months on the solid waste management in Karachi.

Chairman of the Shanghai Shen Gong Environmental Protection Group Company Dick Chen submitted the report to City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal here on Monday and offered an investment of $170 million in the first phase in a solid waste management project.

He informed Mr Kamal that the survey had been started in October last year and covered all 18 towns of the metropolis. He said the report contained details of the mechanism for lifting and transporting domestic solid waste on a door-to-door basis and recycling it in scientific a scientific manner.

The nazim appreciated the extensive work done by the firm, and expressed his gratitude over Shanghai’s mayor’s cooperation in this regard.

Mr Kamal told the firm’s chairman to set up its permanent office in Karachi and takeover the solid waste management system of the city. He said that the city government will provide them the required land and resources, including manpower and machinery.

He also formed a committee to finalise modalities of the project in consultation with the Chinese firm before inking an agreement in this regard.

Mr Dick Chen assured the city nazim that his firm would provide best services to keep the city neat and clean like Shanghai.

He said the work on this project would initially be started with an estimated cost of $170 million.
