Anti-clemency demo

MADRID: Waving Spanish flags, right-wingers staged a mass demonstration here on Saturday against the socialist government’s decision to release on parole a Basque separatist prisoner jailed for 25 murders.

The rally was organised by the conservative opposition Popular Party (PP) in protest at the decision to release on parole ETA militant Jose Ignacio de Juana Chaos, who had spent 20 years in jail.

Police and organisers had no information on how many people were taking part but Spanish media put the number of protestors at tens of thousands.—AFP
