PML fearful of defeat: Abida

Published March 10, 2007

FAISALABAD, March 9: PPP leader and former federal minister Ms Abida Hussain has said the ruling PML realizes that the general elections should be delayed for one year as it lacks the desired vote bank.

Speaking at a press conference here on Friday along with MPA Rana Aftab Ahmed, Dr Asad Moazzam, Riaz Shahid and others, she said the PPP would resist the rigging planned by the ruling party and would not tolerate the electoral malpractices and sale of votes.

She said the ruling party failed to provide any relief to masses owing to its flawed policies.

Ms Abida claimed that the inflation, worsening law and order situation and commission mafia had made lives of the people miserable while devolution plan also devastated the country’s affairs.

She, however, said the present regime succeeded in creating a super rich class associated with President Pervez Musharraf, plundering the public money with the alleged connivance of government officials.

The foreign policy of the Musharraf regime also proved a failure and Pakistan was being pressurised to wipe out the terrorists as payment in this regard had been made. She alleged that the recent visit of US vice-president Dick Chenny was part of the deal struck with President Musharraf.

Regarding the Iranian issue, she said the matter should be resolved through dialogues instead of taking aggressive steps. The PPP would condemn if the US attacked Iran.

About Benazir Bhutto’s participation in the MPC, she said the PPP chairperson would go to the US to address an already scheduled lecture. However, she said that Benazir Bhutto had already nominated the party’s representative to take part in the MPC.

Abida Hussain also spoke in favour of the Lahore High Court bench in the Faisalabad district.
