HYDERABAD, March 7: Sindh Governor Dr. Ishratul Ibad Khan on Wednesday said that positive economic indicators such as hotel occupancy, expansion of industry and economic growth showed that law and order situation in the province was satisfactory.

The governor said while addressing faculty members of the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) after opening the four-day Sindh Universities Sports Gala 2006-07 at the MUET that the government was making sincere efforts to bridge the gulf between urban and rural areas of the province.

He claimed that the province had been faced with sectarian and ethnic problem four years ago but the government’s efficient, judicious and uniform policies had solved it to make people more secure.

There were still many areas, which the government needed to focus such as education, health, skill development and poverty alleviation, he said.

The governor lauded the efforts of Higher Education Commission (HEC) to enable the universities not only to undertake mega projects but also improve quality of education.

He expressed optimism that the efforts being made at micro and macro level in education sector would ultimately take the country to the path of sustainable development and stressed the need for bringing improvements at primary and secondary schools level.

Dr Ibad said that the government was setting up a comprehensive database on schools for analysing and restructuring education system at the primary and secondary levels. The government was also focusing on decentralisation, privatisation, devolution and revamping of the system, he said.

He said that "we have overcome a number of problems which directly pertained to good governance" and the government was making efforts to generate jobs.

He said that interactive events like the Sports Gala at higher education level were indicators of the efforts for bridging gap between rural and urban areas of the province as 20 public and private higher institutions from the province were participating in the event.

The governor, during his visit, also handed over 11 new buses to the management of MUET and laid the foundation stone for the construction of main gate of the university.

Earlier, MUET Vice-Chancellor Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan Rajput highlighted the problems and achievements of the university in his welcome address.
