Anti-police protest by doctors

Published March 7, 2007

FAISALABAD, March 6: Doctors of the DHQ hospital are up in the arms against the Jinnah Town police officer (TPO) and plan to launch a protest drive against him as he allegedly manhandled and threatened a doctor with dire consequences.

Doctors performed their duties on Tuesday wearing black armbands. They set a 24-hour deadline for action against the TPO.

TPO Sarfraz Falki visited the hospital along with his wife to get examine his son. He was asked to go to the children’s ward where duty doctor Javed Khalid would treat the child. Mr Falki visited the ward where he met the duty doctor who was in casual dress. They had an exchange of hot words over the dress and the TPO reportedly called his subordinates to the hospital who locked the doctor in a room.

Dr Javed managed to escape and informed his high-ups about the conduct of police officer and deployment of police in the hospital without the permission of the medical superintendent (MS).

Sources said the nurses and doctor had treated the boy casually when Falki visited the hospital on March 3 at 10pm.

On the contrary, the doctor submitted an application with the MS against the TPO and claimed that the police officer threatened him that he would be kidnapped or murdered.

Meanwhile, the Doctors Action Committee threatened a protest drive and strike in the DHQ, Allied Hospital and the Punjab Medical College if no action was taken against the TPO.
