DADU, March 5: Over 100 physically impaired, including blind, deaf and dumb people staged a demonstration at the DPO Chowk on Monday against over non-payment of zakat for about last one year.

The protesters mainly from Khiarpur Nathan Shah blocked the Indus Highway for two hours.

Led by Abdul Aziz Shaikh, Ahmed Ali Solangi, Abdul Qayoom Chandio, Khadim Hussain Lakhair, Aijaz Shaikh, and Arbab Mallah they raised slogans against Zakat Committee officials.

Aijaz Shaikh alleged that the chairman Taluka Zakat and Ushr Committee and officials of District Zakat Committee were neglecting the physically impaired persons and distributing the money among the selected few. Ahmed Ali Solangi said that their families were facing financial crises as they don’t have money to purchase food and medicines.

The TPO Dadu, Gul Mohammad Chachar assured the protesters in writing that he would arrange a meeting with the DCO and chairman District Zakat Committee soon to resolve their problems.

The protesters dispersed peacefully and lifted the blockade after getting the assurance in writing. Their leaders expressed the hope that they would now receive their right without having to run from pillar to post and post to pillar.
