BAGHDAD, March 3: A prisoner held at a US military brig in Iraq died after being assaulted by other detainees, the US military said on Saturday.

Guards doing routine checks on Friday morning found the detainee without a pulse and not breathing, the military said in a statement. He was pronounced dead around 5am local time, it said.

The military said it was investigating. The incident occurred at Camp Cropper, a US military prison near Baghdad’s airport.

Remains of the prisoner, whose name was withheld, would be transferred to his family, the statement said.—AP
