GUJRANWALA, March 1: Police submitted the charge sheet against an alleged killer of Punjab minister Zille Huma in a local Anti- Terrorism Court No 1 on Thursday.

The judge later transferred the case to the Anti-Terrorism Court No 2 and suggested that the hearing should be conducted regularly to dispose of the case at the earliest. CIA DSP Tahir Gujjar produced accused Muhammad Sarwer before court amid tight security.

When asked about his counsel, the accused replied ATC No 2 judge Tariq Iftikhar that his lawyer is Allah. Later, the accused accepted the offer of state counsel when the judge asked him that the lawyer was necessary to fight the case.

The judge ordered to produce the accused again in the court on Friday (today) for handing him over copies of the charge sheet.

Meanwhile, a large number of people were present outside the court to have a glimpse of the accused.

PENDING: Over 1,000 cases of vehicle registration have been lying pending with the Excise and Taxation Department for the last three months.

Expressing his dismay over the situation, Punjab excise and taxation director-general Sultan Sikander directed officials concerned to clear the backlog immediately.

Reports said that Gujranwala excise and taxation department had started the computerized registration system of vehicles on Dec 6 last year. However, the shortage of staff and computers has caused the pending of cases. The director-general directed to provide four computers along with the trained staff.

HANGED: A condemned prisoner was hanged in the central jail here on Thursday.

According to the prosecution, convict Muhammad Arshad had killed industrialist Younas over an enmity in Aimanabad in 1993. A local sessions court had awarded him death sentence in 1996. The Lahore High Court and the apex court had upheld the decision while the president had also rejected his clemency appeal. The jail authority handed over the body to his heirs.

ARRESTED: Ghakkhar Town police claimed to have arrested over a dozen criminals during a crackdown on the directive of the high-ups on Thursday.

Reports said that a police team, led by a DSP and an SHO, conducted raids on houses of criminals on Old Kot Noora Road and other areas and arrested them. The arrested accused were said to be involved in cases of dacoity, robbery, gambling and drug-trafficking.
