Peacekeepers from Congo arrive

LAHORE, Feb 27: A batch of 280 Pakistan army troops arrived here on Tuesday from Congo, being part of a relief-rotation plan to perform peace-keeping duties under the aegis of the United Nations Mission.

Brig Asghar Nawaz was present at the Allama Iqbal International Airport to receive them, says ISPR sources.

Democratic Republic of Congo, a strife-torn African country with a population of six million people, has suffered from almost four decades of intense factional fighting.

The UN peace-keeping force was approved for Congo as a result of the UN Security Council resolution 1291 of Feb 24, 2000.

Pakistani troops who were inducted in the mission to fulfill the task of restoring peace in the war-ravaged country, have successfully disengaged the dissidents belonging to different feuding tribes, and helped rehabilitate refugees who were forced to flee for safer abodes earlier.—APP
