HYDERABAD, Oct 19: Jamshoro police is reported to have arrested a notorious car lifter after a brief encounter at Jamshoro railway crossing on Friday.

SP Kotri Khadim Rind confirmed the arrest of alleged criminal Mehram Chandio, resident of Naushahro Feroze,

He said that Mehram and his gang had lifted a Toyota Corolla car from the jurisdiction of Bhitai Nagar police station when ASI Manzoor Khoso was present at Jamshoro railway crossing.

He said the ASI and his party intercepted the car at the railway crossing as four suspicious persons were riding in it.

He Rind said that Mehram started firing on the police party but a police constable picked up a brick and hurdled it at Mehram who was hit on the head and fell down.

The police party overpowered Mehram Chandio and recovered one Kalashnikov, a magazine and a large quantity of bullets from his possession, he said and added his three accomplices fled.

Answering questions, SP Rind said that at the time of recovery of the car, it carried number plate V- 3101 whereas another number plate Z-5408 was lying in it.

He said that initial inquiries had revealed that Mehram was involved in kidnapping and police encounter cases of Hatri and Thatta police stations.
