GUJRANWALA, Feb 20: Bus drivers of Wahando went on strike against the killing of one of their colleagues for refusing to pay forced (Jagga) tax on Tuesday.

Driver Akram was on his way to Gujranwala from Wahando. When he reached near Rajaywala, the accused intercepted him and demanded to pay the tax. They opened fire on him when he refused to accept their demand, killing him on the spot. He was the father of five minor children.

Police have registered a case against nine people -Dilnawaz, Haq Nawaz, Ali Nawaz, Shah Nawaz, Kashif, Saleh, Riasat Ali and others - on the report of Asif, the nephew of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the Wahando Bus Owners Association said extortionists were receiving Rs450 per bus forced tax for the last many years. It had informed the district administration and police but in vain.

WARNING: The DO (environment) has warned the manufacturers of black polythene shopping bags of strict action if they do not stop production.

He said at a meeting here on Tuesday that the government had already banned manufacture of polythene bags as they were harmful to humans and pollute environment.
