ISLAMABAD, Feb 17: People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPP) information secretary and MNA Sherry Rehman has claimed to have identified a woman who had attacked her during a protest rally in Karachi on Feb 14.

A statement released on Saturday said the attack on Sherry Rehman was carried out by a “tall and well-built woman” who had been standing behind her during the rally organised by the party to protest against the alleged state-sponsored rigging in the Sindh by-election.

In a televised footage recorded by a private television, Sherry Rehman was seen standing with her fellow party workers as Raza Rabbani addressed the rally. She suddenly tripped and was helped by her colleagues and a “mysterious woman” to stand back on her feet.

She was then seen complaining about something pointing towards her neck, with a painful expression on her face.

All this while, the mysterious woman kept pushing her away from the crowd. She was also seen communicating with somebody in the crowd giving a “wait- a-minute-signal through her hand”.

As the camera closed, Sherry Rehman was seen falling off again while she was being helped by PPP leaders to move out of the stage.

“Interestingly, all the while the woman was on camera, she kept a calm composure. There was no hint of surprise or concern over Sherry’s fall. It clearly was an indication that the woman knew her job well and was confident that she could make another attempt unhindered,” said the statement.

According to reports, shortly before the party acquired the video, the same woman walked in Sherry’s private room at Ziauddin Hospital. She introduced herself as a reporter from a newspaper that nobody had heard of.

Upon being questioned by party workers, the woman said that she dropped by to inquire about Sherry Rehman.

She also said that she was with Sherry on the day of the rally and helped her move out of the stage when she lost her balance. She hurriedly left when the party workers started cornering her.

Apart from neck injuries, Sherry also suffered from a concussion of the spine due to several hits on the back of her neck.

Though the weapon has not been identified yet, Sherry recalls it was a sharp object she was hit with.

Her injuries are of a serious nature and she has been advised complete rest by doctors.
