KARACHI: Attack on Sherry deplored

Published February 18, 2007

KARACHI, Feb 17: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Saturday deplores the attack on PPP MNA Sherry Rehman, also the party’s central information secretary, during a political rally on Wednesday.

“Ms Rehman stated that she was attacked with a hard blunt weapon shortly after she finished her speech, by a woman she did not recognise.

‘‘Since then, medical reports have confirmed that the injury was caused by a hard object which left her unconscious, said a statement issued by the HRCP’s spokesperson.

“The HRCP believes the incident should be investigated independently,” it added.

It said the HRCP was concerned over the surge in political violence which was also evident during the recent by-election in Karachi.

The rights group called upon all the parties to exercise tolerance and restraint in the run-up to the general elections.
