KARACHI, Feb 3: In a display of in and out running, three-year-old bay filly Phapha Kutni raised quite a few eyebrows when she edged past public fancy mare Sonu Love Mani by two lengths to claim days’ honours in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Saturday.

Having failed to finish on the board in the last run she ran like a champion in a smart time of 1 min 3 3/5 seconds interrupting winning streak of the favourite.

Phapha Kutni and Sonu Love Mani fought neck-and-neck after negotiating the band and turning straight for home but in the last burst the former prevailed over the latter.

Owned by Shah Mardan Shah Pir Pagara she was piloted home by jockey M. Wasim II and saddled by Sher Mohammad.

Her stable mate mare Patricia finished two-and-a-half lengths away to finish third while Trust Again completed the frame.

In the next race odds on favourite five-year-old bay horse Tharkyee did Pir Pagara proud when he galloped to one-and-a-half lengths victory over filly Gwenivare with Arshad astride to stretch his winning run to four.

The back-to-back wins enabled the owner to end the day on a satisfying note with a good double.

Arshad also shone in the saddle with a double when he rode joint favourite King Of Sanghar to three-and-a-half lengths victory over filly Abhi Abhi.

Jockey Sohail Ahmed pulled off the first upset of the day when Sherry The Great beat fancied Flying Prince by half-a-length to land the opener.

Similarly, bay filly Sweet Saba with no form worth surprised all and sundry when she got the better of joint favourite Gul-e-Lala by four lengths.

In yet another upset, colt Can’t Catch Me stormed to three lengths victory over Birj-ul-Arab to capture the concluding race. Favourite Lucky Friend was fallen after taking jump off at the starting gate.

As predicted, bay horse Lucky Boss obliged the punters when he posted a half length victory over Mari Paidagiree.

Earlier, in a surprising move the seventh race was cancelled after being run and barring two, all the other 14 riders were fined Rs5,000 for ‘unsatisfactory riding.’

Those who exempted from fine were Shah Pasand and Daruwala who finished first and second.

The punters termed the decision an ‘eye wash’ saying exemplary punishment should have been given to avoid repeat in future.
