KARACHI, Jan 26: The Anti-terrorism Court, Karachi, on Friday adjourned hearing of the case of US diplomat’s killing against two Al Qaeda suspects after three prosecution witnesses were examined.

Osman Ghani and Anwarul Haq are charged with plotting the carbombing near the US consulate in Karachi on March 2, 2006 in which four persons – US diplomat David Foy and three Pakistanis – were killed and 48 others injured.

According to the prosecution, the alleged suicide bomber, later identified as Mohammad Tahir, rammed a car packed with explosives into the other vehicle, carrying US diplomat, as soon as the latter left the consulate’s gate.

Prosecution witness Dr Mehboob, the MLO posted at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, stated that he examined Noorul Hasan, a Rangers jawan injured in the blast, and issued medical certificates after he was provided treatment.

Mohammad Jabir, the Rangers officer posted at the consulate, stated that before the explosion, a car was seen wrongly parked near the consulate’s gate. He directed one of his personnel to remove it but before he could reach the car, it exploded. Later, he fell unconscious, Mohammad Jabir said.

Noorul Hasan said he was sleeping at the time of explosion and was injured by a piece of glass when he came out of his camp. He said he was shifted to the JPMC and provided treatment by Dr Mehboob.

Judge Haq Nawaz Baloch of the ATC, who is conducting the trial inside the Central Prison, Karachi, fixed February 1 for the next hearing.The court allowed an application filed by Anwarul Haq’s counsel, Mohammad Ilyas, for cross-examining Raja Mohammad Tahir, brother of the alleged suicide bomber, once again.—PPI
