PESHAWAR, Jan 23: The Frontier Corps, Frontier Constabulary and police have increased patrolling in the provincial capital to forestall any act of sabotage during Muharram.

In the wake of the frequent bomb blasts and attacks on police in the province, the city police, having assistance of the Frontier Corps (FC) and Frontier Constabulary, have been put on high alert.

People in Peshawar on Tuesday saw FC men patrolling different roads and bazaars of the city. Closed-circuit cameras have been installed at sensitive places, including Imambargahs, business centres and the routes of the mourning processions, a police official said.

Video films of all mourning processions would be made from different angles to monitor any suspicious activity.

Two FC companies were assisting the police, SSP, Operations, Iftikhar Ahmad, said.

Entry of Afghan refugees into the city has been banned till Ashura. Police are manning checkposts at 56 points round the clock and the newly formed Cobra Force has been deployed at 24 locations to check entry of suspicious people in the city.

There were 67 Imambargahs in Peshawar city, cantonment and adjoining rural areas, a police officer said.

Another officer said many policemen had been deputed to perform duties in plain clothes inside the Imambargahs. He said women police had also been deployed at the places of worship.

Police officials are also holding meetings with local nazims, councillors and elders and seeking their help to ensure security and peace on the occasion.
