BAGHDAD, Jan 16: At least 34,452 Iraqis died in daily acts of violence across Iraq in 2006, the United Nations said in a report released on Tuesday. The report said another 36,685 people were wounded in the violence during the year.

“The situation is particularly grave in Baghdad, where most casualties and unidentified bodies that are daily recorded also bear signs of torture,” the report said.

The United Nations report said that between November 1 and December 31 alone, at least 6,376 civilians were killed and another 6,875 were wounded.

The death toll of civilians in Iraq reached a high of 3,709 in October, with sectarian violence responsible for most of the killings.—AFP
