Grenade blast near home of Mirwaiz

SRINAGAR, Jan 15: Suspected militants threw a grenade near the house of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of a faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, here on Monday but no one was hurt, Indian police said.

The Mirwaiz was not at home when the grenade exploded. He was in Jammu at the time of the attack near the Hazratbal mosque, police said.

“A rifle grenade was fired apparently towards the residence of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq which exploded short of target,” a police officer said. “There are no casualties,” he said, adding that security guards deployed at the residence fired shots into the air to scare away the militants.

“We know the people behind this attack. They don’t want a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir problem,” Mr Farooq told Reuters. After the blast, Mr Farooq’s supporters burnt tyres and stoned vehicles.—Agencies
