TANK, Jan 13: Unidentified people kidnapped a junior officer in the Frontier Region Tank adjacent to the South Waziristan Agency on Saturday. Officials said political Muharer Habibur Rehman was going from tehsil office in Jandola to Tank when armed men kidnapped him and shifted to unknown location.

The administration detained 10 people who belonged to Tata Bhitani tribe under the collective responsibility clause of the frontier crimes regulation (FCR).

Assistant Political Agent Akbar Khan told Dawn that negotiations were underway between the authorities and elders of the Tata Bhitani tribe to secure the release of the official.

Officials said that the kidnappers had demanded release of their 33 fellow tribesmen who had been arrested in connection with kidnapping of a trader.

They also demanded that the authorities should hand over 34 vehicles of the tribesmen which were impounded under the FCR.
