SIALKOT, Feb 18: The role of military is on the frontlines and not in politics, Qaumi Jamhoori Party Organizer Omar Asghar Khan claimed on Monday.

Talking to people in Daska and Pasrur Bar associations, he said inter-party elections should be conducted with fixed term for party leadership and auditing of parties.

He supported the provincial autonomy to help creating harmony among the federating units and transfer of powers to the grass-root level.

Later, he inaugurated QJP’s women wing office at the main bazaar, Daska city.

Talking to various delegations in Daska, Pasrur and Sialkot, Mr Khan said Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto should return to country to face cases against them.

On the National Security Council (NSC) constitution, he said the QJP was yet to discuss the matter for making a stance. Any amendment to the 1973 Constitution should be made by the next elected parliament, he added. If electoral reforms were implemented sincerely, he claimed an independent parliament would be formed.

He urged the judiciary, military and civil institutions to focus on accountability.

Replying to a question, he said he was currently engaged in organizing the QJP and alliance with other parties would come next. However, he was firm to field maximum candidates in the coming elections.

He said hidden facts on the Kalabagh Dam project should be brought to light for discussion. He supported Gen Musharraf’s call for a four-year term for the parliament and not forming of a political party.

An independent election commission should be set up with powers of suo motu action to rid elections of rigging, he said.
